cavalry
A type of mobile infantry unit, typically riding a horse (though other steeds such as camel and elephant were also used) and assigned either as a scout, shock troopers, horseback archers, or flankers. They were used in warfare around the world until World War I, when they were gradually replaced by motorized units.
