umamusume

Umamusume: Pretty Derby is a multimedia franchise derived from a gacha game developed and published by Cygames.

Set in an alternate history version of the real world where horses never existed and are replaced with "Umamusume" (lit. "horse girls"), the franchise features characters based on and named after famous throughbred racehorses who partake in an athletic equivalent of horse racing combined with idol performances, adapting the real horses' careers and basing their designs and characterizations off their histories and that of their jockeys and owners. The player assumes the role of a Trainer (coach and atheltics advisor) employed by Tracen Academy, a prestigious boarding school specializing in Umamusume race training, and helps guide their chosen trainees through turn-based, three-year career scenarios.

The game was first announced in 2016 and was initially slated for a Fall 2018 release, only for development to start out from scratch; with the ultimate release date pushed back to Febuary 2021; an English version of the game released on June 26, 2025. A party game spinoff, Umamusume: Party Dash, was released in 2024. The franchise has also received several anime and manga adaptations focusing on different characters and eras of horse racing history.
