I'm willing to cut Discord a tiny bit of slack because their arm is being twisted by actual governments right now, but this tweet just reinforces my hatred for modern social media PR teams. It's all either obivous bot responses or "oopsy poopsy we did a fucky wucky X3" after they're caught trampling on human rights or some shit

There are moments where a business needs to talk seriously, and this case with personal data and consumers being rightfully reluctant to share it because of their last kerfuffle with Persona absolutely is one of them.
Instead, they keep clinging to their attempts to be quirky and relatable to a level that makes the writing of Borderlands look like an obituary.

Preemptively bending the knee to the right and data harvesting companies which totally don't have government contracts is not what I would call an act deserving of slack.

I'm gonna play devil's advocate here, but it's usually better to act early when you have an advantage, or you risk seeing laws being voted that are even more disadvantageous for you. Something something self-regulation something.

Fair enough, part of my bitterness comes from my crippling anxiety regarding forced ID-based age verification and other anti-anonymity/privacy violation laws and companies or sites springing it on everyone, it's bad enough most extant Nitter instances are based in EU and have to abide by restrictions by blocking NSFW there cause Twitter itself does so unless you're verified. I'm also just weary if they cripple themselves in some way just to preempt it - an example that comes to mind is RYM barring certain descriptors like drugs from being searched on their custom chart feature.

I get you. And it sucks that some governements abuse that "to protect the children" but can't be arsed to actually put money into children safety services. It's very annoying that old men have realized that everyone uses internet to talk shit about them, so they try to lock everything down in the name of security.
